Thousands of tourists entered Abkhazia in the first few hours since the opening of the border with Russia. This was reported on August 1 by RIA Novosti with reference to the head of the border detachment, deputy head of the State Security Service of the Republic Rustam Latipov. According to Latipov, since the opening of the Russian-Abkhaz border, several thousand people have entered the republic through the Psou checkpoint, most of them tourists. As could be observed through an online camera installed at the Psou checkpoint, people were waiting to enter Abkhazia from the first minutes of the announcement by the Russian government to lift restrictions on crossing the border. The administration of the President of Abkhazia, Aslan Brzhania, confirmed to reporters that tourists from Russia can cross the border without any restrictions, certificates and other documents confirming the negative result of COVID-19 testing is not required. Earlier, the news agency reported on the lifting of restrictions on crossing the Russian-Abkhaz border in connection with the threat of the spread of coronavirus infection.
