KBS: 61% of people who want to reunite with relatives from the DPRK died in South Korea
Since the beginning of 2020, 1379 people have died in South Korea who want to reunite with their relatives from the DPRK. It is reported by KBS with reference to representatives of the Ministry of Unification of South Korea. As of the end of May, of the 133,386 people who applied for participation in meetings of divided families, 38.5% remain alive. Among them, 25.8% are people over 90 years old, 39.6% are over 80 years old. It is noted that in September 2018, during the inter-Korean summit, Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in signed a joint statement, and also agreed to make efforts to resolve the issue with separated families. However, after the inconclusive summit of the DPRK and the United States in Hanoi, relations between the two Koreas worsened, the implementation of the agreements stalled, as a result of which it became impossible to hold meetings of divided families. Recall that families were divided during the Korean War of 1950 1953.
